History

The Western tradition of assigning properties to stones is old and well documented. Pliny the Elder's Natural History, compiled in the first century CE, devotes a substantial section to stones and their medicinal, protective and other properties, one of the foundational texts of the Western lapidary genre. Marbode, an eleventh century bishop of Rennes, wrote a widely copied medieval Latin lapidary poem, De lapidibus, that carried this genre through the Middle Ages, reshaping and adding to the classical material as it circulated across Europe in manuscript and later print.

What is marketed today as "crystal healing", assigning particular stones to the chakras and to broad metaphysical properties, is a substantially later layer: it took its present, widely recognizable form chiefly in the twentieth century New Age movement, a different frame from the medicinal and talismanic properties Pliny and Marbode describe for the same stones. This page names both layers separately rather than presenting the modern metaphysical attribution as a direct, unbroken continuation of the classical and medieval lapidary tradition.
