Home›Abrahamic Deities›Worshipped InBrowse ByWorshipped InThis page groups deities by the religion whose adherents actively worship them, connecting a god to the living or historical community that maintains their cult. Wikipedia defines cult, in the religious sense, as "the care (Latin: cultus) owed to deities or saints and their temples, shrines, or churches." Browsing this way lets a visitor see every deity that belongs to one religion's worship, rather than reading about gods religion by religion.FactsLearn MoreWorshipped InSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsDirectoryCategoryWell-attestedDeities 1Learn MoreTwo Figures Crossing the Boundaries Between Three Faiths This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.Abrahamic Deities gathers two figures that each raise a question about identity crossing the boundaries between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, rather than belonging cleanly to one. God (Abrahamic) is treated in this atlas as a single subject across all three traditions, following mainstream scholarly and interfaith convention and the shared trace to the God of Abraham, though the three theologies genuinely differ and describing them together does not make them the same. Judaism holds an absolute and undivided unity and does not pronounce the four letter name at all. Christianity confesses one God in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, treating the Trinity as the doctrine of God rather than an addition to it. Islam holds tawhid, and the Qur'an's rejection of any partner to God is read in classical theology as a rejection of exactly the Christian formula. Whether the three traditions worship the same God remains a live and unsettled question inside all three, and this entry sets out the positions without choosing between them. Sophia, wisdom personified as a female figure, shows a divine attribute taking on a life of its own rather than a single deity crossing traditions. In Proverbs she calls in the street and says she stood beside God at the world's founding; Gnostic myth makes her an aeon whose fall produces the craftsman god and the material world; and Orthodox Christianity took Holy Wisdom as a title of Christ, which is what Constantinople's great church is named for, not a saint of that name. Whether Sophia is a figure of speech, a divine attribute or a person is a question every tradition that inherited her has had to answer.Worshipped InFilter Results7 entriesAdherents Today MaximumAll5,000,000 (1)14,800,000 (1)17,000,000 (1)2,000,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Adherents Today MinimumAll5,000,000 (1)14,800,000 (1)17,000,000 (1)2,000,000,000 (1)2,300,000,000 (1)Basis of the Membership FigureAllChurch-Reported Rolls (2)Independent Survey (3)National Census (1)Scholarly or Demographic Estimate (3)Era of Decline End YearAll500 (1)Era of Decline Start YearAll300 (1)Establishment StatusAllConfessionalist (1)Declared Not Established (1)No Establishment (1)Varies by Province (2)How the Expectation Is EnforcedAllCodified Obligation With Consequences (2)Customary Norm (1)Preached Expectation, Not Enforced (1)Membership Figure As OfAll1949-01-01 (1)1969-12-31 (1)2010-01-01 (3)2011-01-27 (1)2011-12-19 (1)2013-01-01 (1)2020-01-01 (3)2021-12-31 (1)2022-01-01 (1)2026-08-13 (1)Origin Period End YearAll400 BCE (1)50 (1)200 (1)632 (1)1043 (1)1863 (1)Origin Period Start YearAll586 BCE (1)30 (1)100 (1)610 (1)1017 (1)1830 (1)1844 (1)Position on MarriageAllMarriage is held to be monogamous, with remarriage after divorce sanctioned under specified conditions (1)Marriage may licitly be polygynous (1)Position on SexualityAllSame-sex orientation or practice is held to bar full membership or participation (1)Same-sex sexual relationships are held contrary to teaching; LGBT individuals are welcomed as members but not ordained, and same-sex unions are not blessed (1)The body holds no single settled position; the question is actively and openly contested within it (3)Position on UsuryAllInterest is permitted but bound by ethical constraints against exploiting the poor (1)Interest of any kind on a loan is forbidden (1)Practice StatusAllClosed ceremonial knowledge, described but not reproduced (1)Living, and practised in varied local forms (2)Partly restricted: some elements are closed to outsiders (2)Standard Rate ExpectedAllNineteen percent.
