Hejaz

The Hejaz, also spelled Hijaz, is a historical region of the Arabian Peninsula covering most of the western part of modern Saudi Arabia, bordered by the Red Sea to the west, Jordan and the Gulf of Aqaba to the north, the Najd to the east and South Arabia to the south. It includes the cities of Mecca, Medina, Jeddah, Tabuk, Yanbu, Taif and Al-Bahah. The source stresses that it holds Mecca and Medina, the first and second holiest sites in Islam, which makes it significant in Arabo-Islamic history. Figures, sites and traditions are placed here when they belong to that western Arabian land.
