Bordered by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, the lake and its shores are home to Bantu kingdoms such as Buganda on its northern shore and, along its eastern and southern margins, to Nilotic peoples including the Luo, whose traditional religion centers on Nyasaye, a supreme being not represented by images or fixed shrines, and on the jok, spirit powers that act in the world and are approached through diviners and ancestral ritual rather than a formal priesthood. Fishing communities on the lake maintain their own ritual observances tied to its waters and its considerable dangers, and the lake's ecology, transformed since the mid twentieth century by the introduction of the Nile perch, remains bound up with the livelihoods and the religious life of the peoples settled around it.FactsLearn MoreLake VictoriaConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsGeographyLatitudeWell-attested1 degrees south 1Approximate reference point, rounded to one decimal place; a large or historical region has no formal center, so this coordinate is conventional, not a precise boundary claim.LongitudeWell-attested33 degrees east 1Approximate reference point, rounded to one decimal place; a large or historical region has no formal center, so this coordinate is conventional, not a precise boundary claim.Modern AreaWell-attestedLake Victoria, bordered by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, and the source of the White Nile. 2TraditionsPrincipal Religious TraditionsWell-attestedLuo traditional religion, centered on the imageless supreme being Nyasaye and on the jok, spirit powers approached through divination; and, on the lake's northern shore, the balubaale tradition and later Christianity and Islam of the Buganda kingdom. 2Sacred and Liturgical LanguagesWell-attestedDholuo, the language of the Luo; Luganda on the lake's northern shore; Swahili as a regional lingua franca. 2Learn MoreA Name Given by an Explorer and a Fishery Remade by an Introduction The lake carries the name given to it in 1858 by the British explorer John Hanning Speke, the first European to reach its shore and to argue, controversially at the time, that it was the Nile's principal source, a claim Speke could not fully prove on that expedition and that took further exploration to confirm. The name has stood ever since, unrelated to any of the languages spoken by the peoples who had fished and settled its shores for centuries before Speke's arrival and who call the lake by other names in their own tongues. The lake's ecology underwent its own transformation in the twentieth century when the Nile perch, a large predatory fish, was deliberately introduced in the 1950s to boost commercial fishing. The perch reshaped the lake's food web, contributing to the collapse of numerous native cichlid species, while also creating an export fishing industry that reordered the livelihoods of lakeside communities, Luo fishing villages among them, whose relationship to the lake's waters, framed in older practice through ritual observance as much as through subsistence, was remade by an intervention made for economic reasons that had nothing to do with the religious life it went on to affect.Lake VictoriaFilter Results2 entriesPlace of OriginAllGalilee (1)Hejaz (1)DenominationsAllAfrican Methodist Episcopal Church (1)African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (1)Ahmadiyya (1)Aladura (1)Alawites (1)Alevism (1)American Baptist Churches USA (1)American Unitarian Association (1)Amish (1)Anabaptism (1)Anglican Communion (1)Anglicanism (1)Armenian Apostolic Church (1)Assemblies of God (1)Assyrian Church of the East (1)Baptist (1)Bulgarian Orthodox Church (1)Calvinism (Reformed) (1)Christian and Missionary Alliance (1)Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (1)Christian Reformed Church in North America (1)Christian Science (1)Church of Cyprus (1)Church of England (1)Church of God (Anderson, Indiana) (1)Church of God in Christ (1)Church of Greece (1)Church of Ireland (1)Church of Scotland (1)Church of Sweden (1)Church of the Nazarene (1)Churches of Christ (1)Congregationalists (1)Coptic Orthodoxy (1)Disciples of Christ (1)Dutch Reformed Church (1)Eastern Orthodoxy (1)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (1)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (1)Evangelicalism (1)Free Methodist Church (1)Georgian Orthodox Church (1)Global Methodist Church (1)Grace Communion International (1)Greek Orthodox Church (1)Historically Black Protestant Tradition (1)Ibadism (1)Ismailism (1)Jehovah's Witnesses (1)Kharijites (1)Kimbanguist Church (1)Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) (1)Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod (1)Lutheranism (1)Mainline Protestantism (1)Maronite Church (1)Mennonites (1)Methodism (1)Moravian Church (1)Nation of Islam (1)National Baptist Convention of America (1)National Baptist Convention USA Incorporated (1)Nondenominational Christianity (1)Old Believers (1)Oneida Community (1)Oneness Pentecostalism (1)Oriental Orthodoxy (1)Pentecostalism (1)Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
