Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam (M.S. Subbulakshmi Recording)

Album

M.S. Subbulakshmi's recording of the Venkatesa Suprabhatam, a Sanskrit dawn hymn traditionally sung to wake Lord Venkateswara (a form of Vishnu) at the Tirumala temple. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam deputed a temple singer to teach her the verses, and All India Radio broadcast her rendering in 1958. Her full studio recording, released as an LP by the Gramophone Company of India in November 1963, went on to become the largest-selling non-film recording in Indian musical history, and remains the recording most Hindu households across South India and the diaspora wake to each morning.
