Origin Period Start Year

This page groups sacred sites by the year their sacred standing is first dated to. Wikipedia notes that the relics of the apostle James "discovered c. 830" are what made Santiago de Compostela a pilgrimage destination. Browsing by start year lets a visitor compare how old one site's sacred status is against another's.

Overview
What Defines This Grouping
Sanctuaries rather than congregational buildings. A Greek temple housed the god's image; the cult acted at the altar in the open air outside it, and the sanctuary boundary, not the roof, made the place holy. The group includes the panhellenic sanctuaries, which belonged to no single city and drew the whole Greek world to their oracles and games. 2

Sacred Sites of Ancient Greece

This group gathers the sacred sites of ancient Greek religion, the temples, sanctuaries and oracles where the gods were worshipped and consulted. Greek sacred places included panhellenic sanctuaries that drew worshippers from across the Greek world and hosted the great games and oracles.

The browser will find the temples of the Olympian gods, the oracular sanctuaries and the sacred precincts of the Greek cities. The entries describe each site's deity, cult and history as a place of a historical religion.
