Tradition

This page groups figures by the wider religious tradition that recognizes them. Wikipedia notes that "within Christianity, veneration is practiced by groups such as the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Oriental Orthodox Churches, all of which have varying types of canonization or glorification processes." Browsing by tradition lets a visitor read every figure from one religious tradition together.

What Defines This Grouping
A Christian category: those sent out by Jesus, above all the Twelve chosen during his ministry, together with Paul and a few others to whom the title is extended. It does not transfer to the other traditions in the atlas. 2
Size of the Traditional Set

The Apostles

This group holds the apostles: in Christian tradition, those sent out by Jesus to carry his message, above all the Twelve chosen during his ministry and figures such as Paul added later. They are the foundational witnesses on whom the early Church understood itself to be built.

The browser will find the Twelve, including Peter, John, James and their companions, along with Paul and others called apostles. The entries describe each figure's role in the Gospels and the early Church, and the traditions of their later missions and deaths.
