A Marian apparition is a reported supernatural appearance of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, to one or more witnesses, understood within Catholic tradition as an external manifestation distinct from an interior vision or a purely private revelation. Reported apparitions typically involve a specific place, date, and named witness or witnesses, and the most widely recognized instances share this same structure of a bounded visionary event followed by ecclesiastical investigation and, in some cases, formal church recognition: the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe near Mexico City, dated by tradition to December 1531, reported to the Nahua convert Juan Diego; the eighteen apparitions reported by Bernadette Soubirous at the grotto of Massabielle near Lourdes between February and July 1858; and the apparitions reported by three shepherd children at the Cova da Iria near Fatima on the thirteenth of each month from May to October 1917. Historians and theologians of Marian devotion treat these episodes as a distinct, recurring category of religious event, separate from ordinary Marian veneration or dogmatic definition.
