Eingana

Australian Aboriginal Deities

Eingana is a creator goddess of the Jawoyn people in Australian Aboriginal mythology, also known as the Dreamtime Snake. She is described as the mother of all water animals and of humans, a snake goddess of death who dwells in the Dreaming. According to the tradition, she had no natural means of giving birth, having simply grown larger and larger with the life inside her, until the god Barraiya opened a passage for her with a spear so that labor could begin. Eingana is said to hold a sinew connecting her to every living creature, and should she ever let one go, the creature attached to it dies.
