Wikipedia notes one live philosophical debate asks "what is the rational way to revise one's beliefs when presented with various sorts of evidence?" Browsing by obligation lets a visitor tell a required belief from one merely tolerated within a tradition.FactsLearn MoreObligatory on those who meet its conditionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedSingle tenets, rules and prohibitions isolated from the traditions that hold them and stated in that tradition's own terms with the reason it offers. Organising religion around propositional belief is itself a Western and largely post-Reformation habit: several traditions treat practice, lineage or law as primary and have no close equivalent of the noun. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedUsed, but its validity as a comparative category is disputed 1Learn MoreWhat a Tradition Holds and Requires This category holds the specific things traditions believe and require: articles of faith, dietary rules, prohibitions, obligations and taboos. Where a religion entry describes a whole tradition, a belief entry isolates a single tenet or rule (the oneness of God, the prohibition of certain foods, an obligation of charity, a taboo on certain acts), and states it plainly. Each entry names the tradition that holds the belief, states it in that tradition's own terms, and gives the reason the tradition itself offers, so that comparable beliefs across traditions can be set side by side.Belief and boundary Beliefs and the rules that follow from them often mark the boundary of a community, what its members affirm and how they must live, and small differences in them can distinguish one tradition or denomination from another. The atlas treats each as the tradition presents it, without ranking or refuting. The beliefs group by kind (core tenets, cosmological beliefs, moral precepts, dietary restrictions, prohibitions and taboos), so a browser can compare, for instance, the dietary rules of several traditions together. The enacted side of religious life, rites, practices and festivals, is treated under its own categories.Obligatory on those who meet its conditionsFilter Results9 entriesStatus Within the TraditionAllAffirmed, but left to individual conscience (1)Binding, without a formal definition (9)Rejected, or not held, within this tradition (1)Origin Period Start YearAll300 (1)624 (1)631 (1)Affirmation OfAllDharma (1)Four Regulative Principles (1)Category of BeliefAllDietary Restrictions (1)Moral Precepts (2)TraditionAllAhmadiyya (2)Alawites (1)Alevism (1)Anglicanism (1)Armenian Apostolic Church (1)Assyrian Church of the East (1)Church of Cyprus (1)Church of England (1)Church of Greece (1)Coptic Orthodoxy (1)Digambara (2)Eastern Orthodoxy (1)Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople (1)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Georgian Orthodox Church (1)Greek Orthodox Church (1)Ibadism (2)ISKCON (Hare Krishna) (1)Ismailism (3)Kharijites (2)Lutheranism (1)Maronite Church (1)Methodism (1)Old Believers (1)Oriental Orthodoxy (1)Quranism (2)Roman Catholicism (1)Romanian Orthodox Church (1)Russian Orthodox Church (1)Salafism (2)Serbian Orthodox Church (1)Shia (Twelver) (4)Sufism (2)Sunni (2)Svetambara (2)Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (1)Ukrainian Orthodox Church (1)Wahhabism (2)Zaidiyyah (2)SubjectAllCommunity and its boundaries (1)Ethics and conduct (3)Food and purity (1)Religious authority and succession (1)Ritual and worship (3)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 9Dharma: righteous dutyObligatory on those who meet its conditionsEvery Believer Must Follow a Living Jurist in Matters of LawObligatory on those who meet its conditionsFasting from dawn to dusk in RamadanObligatory on those who meet its conditionsFasting in LentObligatory on those who meet its conditionsPilgrimage to Mecca once in a lifetimeObligatory on those who meet its conditionsStrict vegetarianism, no root vegetablesObligatory on those who meet its conditionsTaqiyya: Belief May Be Concealed Under ThreatObligatory on those who meet its conditionsThe five great vows (mahavratas)Obligatory on those who meet its conditionsThe Four Regulative Principles Forbid Meat, Intoxication, Illicit Sex and GamblingObligatory on those who meet its conditionsSources1.
