Wikipedia notes that "to believe something is to take it to be true; for instance, to believe that snow is white is comparable to accepting the truth of the proposition 'snow is white.'" Browsing by subject lets a visitor find every belief built around the same underlying topic.FactsLearn MoreRevelation and scriptureSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsOverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedSingle tenets, rules and prohibitions isolated from the traditions that hold them and stated in that tradition's own terms with the reason it offers. Organising religion around propositional belief is itself a Western and largely post-Reformation habit: several traditions treat practice, lineage or law as primary and have no close equivalent of the noun. 1StatusStanding as a Comparative CategoryWell-attestedUsed, but its validity as a comparative category is disputed 1Learn MoreWhat a Tradition Holds and Requires This category holds the specific things traditions believe and require: articles of faith, dietary rules, prohibitions, obligations and taboos. Where a religion entry describes a whole tradition, a belief entry isolates a single tenet or rule (the oneness of God, the prohibition of certain foods, an obligation of charity, a taboo on certain acts), and states it plainly. Each entry names the tradition that holds the belief, states it in that tradition's own terms, and gives the reason the tradition itself offers, so that comparable beliefs across traditions can be set side by side.Belief and boundary Beliefs and the rules that follow from them often mark the boundary of a community, what its members affirm and how they must live, and small differences in them can distinguish one tradition or denomination from another. The atlas treats each as the tradition presents it, without ranking or refuting. The beliefs group by kind (core tenets, cosmological beliefs, moral precepts, dietary restrictions, prohibitions and taboos), so a browser can compare, for instance, the dietary rules of several traditions together. The enacted side of religious life, rites, practices and festivals, is treated under its own categories.Revelation and scriptureFilter Results31 entriesStatus Within the TraditionAllBinding, without a formal definition (22)Formally condemned by this tradition (1)Genuinely disputed within the tradition (3)Rejected, or not held, within this tradition (5)Standard teaching, not formally defined (6)Origin Period Start YearAll-29 (1)750 (1)800 (1)1253 (1)1647 (1)1830 (1)1863 (1)1881 (1)1934 (1)Affirmation OfAllContinuing Revelation (1)Inner Light (1)Progressive Revelation (1)Category of BeliefAllCore Tenets (13)TraditionAllAhmadiyya (1)Alawites (1)Alevism (1)American Humanist Association (1)Anabaptism (1)Assyrian Church of the East (1)Baptist (2)Beta Israel (2)Breslov Hasidism (1)Calvinism (Reformed) (2)Chabad-Lubavitch (1)Church of Scotland (1)Church of Sweden (1)Church of the Nazarene (1)Churches of Christ (1)Community of Christ (3)Divine Science (1)Dutch Reformed Church (1)Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church (1)Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (2)Evangelicalism (2)Haredi Judaism (1)Ibadism (2)Ismailism (2)Karaite Judaism (1)Latter-day Saints (Mormonism) (2)Lutheranism (1)Modern Orthodox Judaism (1)Nation of Islam (1)National Baptist Convention of America (2)Nichiren (1)Nichiren Shoshu (1)Nyingma (1)Orthodox Judaism (1)Pentecostalism (2)Presbyterianism (2)Progressive National Baptist Convention (2)Protestantism (1)Quakerism (Religious Society of Friends) (1)Quranism (1)Religious Science (Centers for Spiritual Living) (1)Salafism (1)Seventh-day Adventism (2)Shakers (1)Shia (Twelver) (1)Shingon (1)Soka Gakkai (1)Sri Vaishnavism (1)Sufism (2)Sunni (1)Tendai (3)The Episcopal Church (1)Theravada (1)Tiantai (2)Unity (Unity School of Christianity) (1)Wahhabism (1)Zaidiyyah (2)ObligationAllObligatory (9)Undertaken only with authorisation or transmission (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 31A Solitary Report Is Weighed Against the Established Principles of the QuranRevelation and scriptureA Transmitted Report Outweighs Reasoning by AnalogyRevelation and scriptureAn Expanded Biblical Canon Including Enoch and JubileesRevelation and scriptureBiblical inerrancyRevelation and scriptureBoth the Sanskrit Vedas and the Tamil Hymns of the Alvars Are RevelationRevelation and scriptureCessation of the miraculous spiritual giftsRevelation and scriptureContinuing revelation through living prophetsRevelation and scriptureElijah Muhammad Is the Messenger of GodRevelation and scriptureEsoteric and exoteric teaching as oneRevelation and scriptureEsoteric interpretation of scripture (batin)Revelation and scriptureMahavairocana as the cosmic Buddha who preaches the DharmaRevelation and scriptureRejection of the Oral Torah (Talmud)Revelation and scriptureScripture alone (sola scriptura)Revelation and scriptureScripture as witness rather than as historyRevelation and scriptureScripture Is Read as Metaphysical AllegoryRevelation and scriptureTerma: teachings concealed and later revealed as treasureRevelation and scriptureThe Book of Mormon as additional scriptureRevelation and scriptureThe five periods and eight teachings as the order of the Buddha's preachingRevelation and scriptureThe Humanist Manifesto Is a Revisable Statement, Not a CreedRevelation and scriptureThe Inner LightRevelation and scriptureThe Lotus Sutra as the supreme teachingRevelation and scriptureThe Orit in Ge'ez Is Scripture and There Is No Talmudic LiteratureRevelation and scriptureThe Pali Canon (Tipitaka) as authoritative scriptureRevelation and scriptureThe Quran Alone Binds and Hadith Carries No Legal AuthorityRevelation and scriptureThe Quran is createdRevelation and scriptureThe Settled Practice of the People of Medina Is a Source of LawRevelation and scriptureThe Sources of Law Are Four and the List Is ClosedRevelation and scriptureThe Sunna Recorded in Hadith Is a Binding Source of LawRevelation and scriptureThe Torah is divinely revealed and bindingRevelation and scriptureThe unity of all religionsRevelation and scriptureTheodore of Mopsuestia as the Authoritative Interpreter of ScriptureRevelation and scriptureSources1.
