Branches (Language Families)

Major branches of larger language families, groups of related languages that share a recent common ancestor inside a bigger family. The Germanic languages form a branch of the Indo-European family, and the Bantu languages are treated as a branch of the proposed Niger-Congo family. Their speakers carry scripture, liturgy and oral tradition across large parts of Europe, North America, Africa and Oceania, and the sacred languages of many religions belong to branches of this kind.
