Wikipedia notes that "in Israel, it is used for religious and agriculture purposes, and is also an official calendar for civil holidays alongside the Gregorian calendar." Browsing by practice status lets a visitor tell a calendar still in civil use from one kept only for ritual dates.FactsLearn MoreLiving tradition, practised todaySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStructureStructureWell-attestedThree workable answers to one astronomical problem: a solar year holds the seasons and lets the months drift from the Moon; a lunar year holds the months and drifts through the seasons; a lunisolar year intercalates a month to hold both. 1OverviewWhat Defines This GroupingWell-attestedWhole calendar systems, as against the months, day-units, cycles and eras they are built from, which the atlas holds as their own categories. No single origin, people or date belongs to this grouping. 1Learn MoreHow Traditions Count Time A calendar is a system for organising and counting days into larger units (weeks, months, years and eras), and this category holds the calendars of the world's traditions: solar, lunar and lunisolar, with their months, intercalations and reckonings of the year. Each entry records a system's structure, where and by whom it is used, and how it relates to the common civil calendar. The fundamental problem every calendar solves is that the natural cycles do not divide evenly: the year is not a whole number of days or of lunar months, so any calendar must choose which cycle to follow and how to reconcile it with the others.Solar, lunar, lunisolar A solar calendar (like the Gregorian) follows the Sun and keeps the seasons fixed but lets the months drift from the Moon; a lunar calendar (like the Islamic) follows the Moon and lets the year drift through the seasons; a lunisolar calendar (like the Hebrew, Chinese and Hindu) follows the Moon but adds a leap month periodically to stay in step with the Sun. Each choice shapes a tradition's festivals and life. The atlas describes each calendar's rule, its months and eras, and its religious use. The individual months and units of particular calendars (Hebrew, Islamic, Maya and others), are treated in their own categories under Calendars & Time.Living tradition, practised todayFilter Results26 entriesOrigin Period Start YearAll-1250 (2)-500 (1)-400 (2)-104 (1)-100 (1)-45 (2)1 (1)78 (1)325 (1)499 (1)525 (1)632 (1)638 (1)800 (1)1582 (1)1645 (1)1923 (1)2003 (1)TraditionAllBahá’í Faith (1)Buddhism (3)Candomblé (1)Chinese Folk Religion (1)Christianity (6)Hinduism (3)Islam (1)Jainism (1)Judaism (1)Maya Religion (3)Modern Paganism (1)Odinani (1)Sikhism (1)Taoism (1)Wicca (1)Yorùbá Religion (Ifá) (1)Zoroastrianism (1)Calendar TypeAllCount (3)Cyclical (3)Liturgical (2)Lunar (2)Lunisolar (6)Solar (7)Part OfAllMaya Calendar Round (2)Derived FromAllAncient Egyptian Civil Calendar (1)Coptic Calendar (1)Julian Calendar (1)Originated InAllEgypt (1)India (1)Iran (1)Ireland (1)Israel (1)Nigeria (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 26Badi (Baha'i) CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayBalinese PawukonLiving tradition, practised todayBuddhist (Southeast Asian) CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayChinese Luni-Solar CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayChristian Liturgical YearLiving tradition, practised todayCommon EraLiving tradition, practised todayCoptic CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayEthiopian CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayGregorian CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayHaabLiving tradition, practised todayHebrew CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayHindu PanchangaLiving tradition, practised todayIgbo Market WeekLiving tradition, practised todayIslamic (Hijri) CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayJulian CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayMaya Calendar RoundLiving tradition, practised todayNanakshahi CalendarLiving tradition, practised todaySaka CalendarLiving tradition, practised todaySexagenary Cycle (Jiazi)Living tradition, practised todayThe Celtic Tree CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayThe Yoruba Four-Day WeekLiving tradition, practised todayTibetan CalendarLiving tradition, practised todayTzolkinLiving tradition, practised todayVira Nirvana SamvatLiving tradition, practised todayWheel of the YearLiving tradition, practised todayZoroastrian CalendarLiving tradition, practised todaySources1.
