Origin from 1978
Founded in England in 1978 by Ray Sherwin and Peter J. Carroll, the Illuminates of Thanateros teaches what its founders and later practitioners call chaos magic, an approach that treats belief itself as a tool to be adopted and set aside according to what produces results rather than as a fixed metaphysical commitment, drawing eclectically on techniques from ceremonial magic, shamanism, Eastern meditation and the sigil methods pioneered by the artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare. The order's name pairs Thanatos and Eros, the Greek personifications of death and desire, which its teaching treats as the two fundamental polarities magical practice works with. Structured around a graded system of initiation with local groups called pacts, the order asks practitioners to treat any given magical or religious paradigm as a working model to be tested rather than as literal truth, and holds no fixed theology or required set of beliefs of its own.

Belief as a Tool: What Chaos Magic Teaches
Peter J. Carroll set out the order's working philosophy most fully in Liber Null & Psychonaut, first published in the years around the order's founding, which frames magic as a practical discipline of consciousness rather than as membership in any particular cosmology. The central technique the book teaches, gnosis, is a state of heightened, narrowed attention achieved through methods as different as ecstatic dance, sensory deprivation, or intense concentration, in which the practitioner's stated intention is held to bypass ordinary conscious resistance and take effect more directly, whether that effect is understood psychologically, as an intervention in the practitioner's own mind, or magically, as an intervention in the wider world.
Carroll and Sherwin's central methodological claim, and the one from which chaos magic as a wider movement takes its name, is that the specific belief system a practitioner uses to frame a working, whether drawn from ceremonial Golden Dawn style magic, from a particular pantheon, or from an invented system built for the occasion, is a tool chosen for its effectiveness in a given working rather than a permanent commitment the practitioner is obligated to hold. A working system is used because it works, in this framing, not because it is metaphysically true, and a practitioner is expected to be able to shift between systems as different workings call for them.
Spare's Sigils, and a Structure Without Dogma
Much of the order's practical technique descends from the earlier English artist and occultist Austin Osman Spare, whose sigil method, condensing a written statement of desire into an abstract glyph and then, through a technique of induced trance or exhausted attention, consciously forgetting the specific wish the sigil encoded, the order adopted as one of its core working tools well before it had a fixed institutional form. Spare himself worked outside any organized order, and the Illuminates of Thanateros is in large part responsible for taking his individually developed method and building it into a repeatable, teachable curriculum passed on within a formal initiatory structure.
That structure is organized into local cells called pacts, connected loosely rather than through a strong central hierarchy, and a graded system of initiation that measures a member's progress by demonstrated skill and practical results rather than by doctrinal correctness, consistent with the order's central refusal to require belief in any specific system as a condition of membership. This structural looseness, combined with an explicit ethos that any given ritual framework is provisional, has made the order and the wider chaos magic current it helped popularize a significant influence on later eclectic and syncretic occult practice well beyond its own formal membership.
