Fehu, sounded as F, is the first rune of the Elder Futhark and the first of Freyr's aett. Its literal meaning is cattle, and in the early Germanic world cattle were wealth on the hoof, so the rune stands for movable wealth, money, property, and the energy that earns and increases it. The rune poems remember it as riches that comfort all people yet must be shared freely if a man would prosper, and so its deeper teaching is the wise circulation of abundance rather than the hoarding of it. It is linked to Freyr and the Vanir, gods of fertility and plenty. In divination Fehu speaks of prosperity won, gain, and fulfilled ambition, but warns against greed and the loss that comes of clutching too tightly. In magic it is used to attract wealth, draw and preserve resources, and send energy toward a goal.
