Tanakh is an acronym: Torah (Law), Neviim (Prophets), Ketuvim (Writings), and it names the Hebrew Bible as Judaism arranges and counts it, at 24 books. Christian Old Testaments contain the same Hebrew material but divide and order it differently, reaching 39 books in Protestant Bibles and ending with the prophets rather than with Chronicles. The Hebrew text now printed is the Masoretic Text, fixed by scribal families in Tiberias who added vowel signs, accents and marginal notes to a consonantal text they were forbidden to alter. The Dead Sea Scrolls, a thousand years older than the best medieval codices, showed how little that text had drifted.
