Major pilgrimage destination today

This page groups holy cities by whether each one is still an active pilgrimage destination today. Wikipedia notes such a city may contain a headquarters complex that "constitutes a major destination of human traffic, or pilgrimage to the city, especially for major ceremonies and observances." Browsing by pilgrimage-status lets a visitor tell a city that still draws pilgrims from one that no longer does.

What a City Page Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A city entry records why a particular city matters to one or more religious traditions, whether as a pilgrimage destination, the seat of a religious authority, the setting of a founding or formative event, or home to a major community or institution today. Because a single city can hold this kind of significance for several different traditions at once, often for different and unrelated reasons, an entry can carry as many linked traditions, events and sites as its history actually supports.

A city is kept distinct from a Sacred Site entry, which covers one specific place whose sanctity is the whole reason it is recorded, a shrine, a temple compound, a particular tomb. A city is the larger urban whole that can contain many such sites within it, along with everything else a city ordinarily contains that has nothing to do with religion at all; the entry here stays focused on the religious layer rather than duplicating a general geography or history reference.

Where a city's religious significance and its present day population, government or economy have grown apart, a small pilgrimage town sustaining an outsized sacred reputation, or a modern capital whose religious history sits beneath centuries of later change, the entry says so, since that gap is frequently part of what makes the city's religious standing worth recording at all.

Sacred Cities and the Study of Pilgrimage

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Cities such as Jerusalem, Mecca, Varanasi and Lhasa draw pilgrims by the millions for reasons that long predate any modern city planning, and the pattern of a city built up around, and sustained by, its role as a pilgrimage destination repeats across traditions that otherwise share very little. Studying that pattern as a subject in its own right, rather than as a footnote to the history of any one religion, grew into a recognized field within religious studies and anthropology in the latter half of the twentieth century.

The anthropologists Victor and Edith Turner did much of the founding work, arguing in Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture, published in 1978, that a pilgrimage places a person in a liminal state, stepped outside ordinary social rank and daily routine, which is part of why a pilgrimage city can function the way it does: a shared destination that levels distinctions travelers carried with them from home. Later scholarship has tested and complicated that idea considerably, but pilgrimage remains the lens through which most sacred cities are studied today.

Later researchers pushed back on how uniformly the Turners' model applied, pointing out that pilgrimage sites are also frequently sites of real economic competition, political contest and disagreement between rival groups within the same tradition, which the language of shared levelling communion tends to underplay, and most current work now treats a pilgrimage city as a site of both unity and contest at once rather than one or the other.
