Jean Charlier de Gerson was a French Roman Catholic scholar, educator, reformer and poet who lived from 1363 to 1429. He served as Chancellor of the University of Paris and was a guiding influence of the conciliar movement, one of the most prominent theologians at the Council of Constance. He was among the first thinkers to develop what would later be called natural rights theory, and he was also one of the first individuals to defend Joan of Arc and to proclaim her supernatural vocation as authentic.
