Angela of Foligno

Angela of Foligno was an Italian Franciscan tertiary who lived from 1248 to 1309 and became known as a mystic through her extensive writings about her mystical revelations; the respect those writings engendered in the Catholic Church earned her the title Theologorum Magistra, Teacher of Theologians, first used by Maximilian Sandaeus and later cited by Bollandus in the Acta Sanctorum. She was noted not only for her spiritual writings but also for founding a religious community that refused to become an enclosed order so that it might continue her vision of caring for those in need. The Catholic Church declared her a saint in 2013, through an equivalent canonization that did not follow the ordinary judicial canonization process.
