Bonaventure, born Giovanni di Fidanza, was an Italian Catholic Franciscan bishop, cardinal, scholastic theologian and philosopher who lived from 1221 to 1274. He served as the seventh Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor and for a time as Bishop of Albano. He was canonized on 14 April 1482 by Pope Sixtus IV, and in 1588 Pope Sixtus V declared him a Doctor of the Church, naming him the Seraphic Doctor. His feast day is 15 July. Many medieval writings once attributed to him have since been reclassified under the name Pseudo-Bonaventure.
