The Diocese of Detroit was established in 1833 and elevated to an archdiocese in 1937 with Edward Mooney as its first archbishop. Its mother church is the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, a Norman Gothic building begun in 1913 and serving as the cathedral since 1938. The archdiocese comprises six counties in southeast Michigan.
