The Basílica del Santo Niño was founded on 28 April 1565 by Augustinian friars and is the oldest Roman Catholic foundation in the Philippines. It houses the Santo Niño de Cebú, an image of the Christ child given at the baptism of the ruler of Cebu in 1521 and found again in the ashes of the town in 1565. The Sinulog held each January is built around the image and is the largest festival in the country.
