The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church was organized on December 16, 1870, in Jackson, Tennessee, by 41 former enslaved members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, who founded it as the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America; it adopted its current name in 1954. It was the first African American denomination established in the South. Its headquarters, the CME Church Episcopal Office, are located in Memphis, Tennessee.
