The church at Axum in Tigray is the senior church of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and the traditional site of the coronation of Ethiopian emperors. A chapel in its precinct is held by the church to contain the Ark of the Covenant, guarded by a single monk who alone may enter, a claim the church makes and does not submit to examination. The compound holds an older and a newer church and a treasury.
