Greater Grace Temple was founded in 1927 by Bishop Ellington Forbes as a three-member congregation meeting in his basement during the Great Depression. It is affiliated with the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, a Oneness Pentecostal denomination; longtime pastor Bishop Charles H. Ellis III, who has led the church since 1996, has also served as the denomination's Presiding Bishop. The church operates from the 19-acre "City of David" complex, completed in 2002, and has grown into one of Detroit's largest congregations.
