The Hassan II Mosque on the Casablanca shore was completed in 1993 to a design by Michel Pinseau, part of it built out over the Atlantic. It holds twenty five thousand worshippers inside and about eighty thousand on its grounds, and its minaret rises 210 metres, among the tallest in the world. Craft work in zellij, carved plaster and cedar was done by Moroccan artisans, and the mosque was paid for in large part by public subscription.
