The shrine at Najaf holds the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son in law of Muhammad and the first Imam of Shia Islam. Shia tradition also places the remains of Adam and Noah on the site. Najaf grew around the shrine into the principal centre of Shia learning, and its seminary and the senior clerics resident there carry authority across the Shia world.
