The shrine at Karbala holds the tomb of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of Muhammad, killed there in 680, together with his sons and many of the companions who died with him. The Arbaeen observance forty days after Ashura brings pilgrims to Karbala in numbers reported up to twenty million, which is among the largest annual gatherings anywhere. The shrine keeps a continuous ritual and mourning calendar.
