Jogyesa in Jongno is the chief temple of the Jogye Order, the largest school of Korean Buddhism, and the seat of its administration. A temple was first founded on the ground in 1395, the present foundation dates from 1910 as Gakhwangsa, it became the order's head temple in 1936 and took the name Jogyesa in 1954. It keeps a full daily service in the middle of Seoul and its lantern festival before the Buddha's birthday fills the surrounding streets.
