Masjid Al-Ansar, at the corner of Northwest 7th Avenue and 53rd Street in Miami, was established in the late 1960s as a Muhammad's Temple of Islam and is recognized as the first extant mosque in Florida; the building was designated a local historic landmark in 2004. Under the leadership of Imam W. Deen Mohammed in the 1970s, the community transitioned from the Nation of Islam to Sunni Islam and remains affiliated with the W. Deen Mohammed-linked Muslim American Society network known as The Mosque Cares. It offers Quranic studies, Islamic classes, and food-assistance programs to the surrounding community.
