Masjid Bilal of Cleveland, built in 1983, is recognized as the first mosque built from the ground up in Greater Cleveland and among the first mosques designed and built by a predominantly African American congregation in the United States. The masjid, named for Bilal ibn Rabah, states its purpose as promoting "faith, community, and family life, following the clear dictates of the Holy Qur'an and the Tradition of the Prophet Muhammad," and identifies with the ministry associated with Imam W. Deen Mohammed. It offers daily prayers and community programming on Cleveland's east side.
