Meiji Jingu enshrines the spirits of the Meiji Emperor and the Empress Shoken and opened in 1920, its surrounding forest planted from bare ground with trees donated from across Japan. It is among the most visited shrines in the country, especially at the new year, and holds Shinto weddings and seasonal rites through the year.
