Mother African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, organized in 1796 by Black members who withdrew from New York City's John Street Methodist Episcopal Church, is the founding congregation of the AME Zion denomination and the oldest Black church in New York State. Known as "The Freedom Church," it hosted abolitionist meetings and counted Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth among its members and associates. The congregation is now located in Harlem.
