Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded by Richard Allen in 1794, is the mother congregation of the AME denomination and stands on the oldest parcel of real estate continuously owned by Black Americans in the United States. Allen and fellow congregants left St. George's Methodist Episcopal Church over segregated seating and purchased a former blacksmith shop to establish the church at its present Philadelphia site. It is a designated National Historic Landmark.
