The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs was formed in 1973 as the umbrella body for Muslim organisations in Nigeria, with the Sultan of Sokoto as its president general. It speaks for the community in dealings with the federal government, coordinates the sighting of the moon and the announcement of Eid, and issues statements on national questions through its expanded general purpose committee. Its national headquarters is inside the Abuja National Mosque complex.
