The Progressive National Baptist Convention was founded in 1961 by a group of pastors, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Gardner C. Taylor, who separated from the National Baptist Convention, USA, over disagreements about civil rights strategy and convention leadership term limits. The convention became closely associated with the civil rights movement and remains active in social-justice ministry. Its national headquarters are located in Washington, D.C.
