The Shaolin Monastery stands at the foot of Wuru Peak on Mount Song in Dengfeng, Henan, and was founded in 495 under the Northern Wei. It is held to be the birthplace of Chan Buddhism and the seat of the martial tradition that carries its name. It remains a working monastery, run today through a committee arrangement with the municipality rather than by an abbot alone, and receives large numbers of visitors alongside its monastic community.
