The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is the permanent assembly of the Catholic bishops of the United States, formed in 2001 from the merger of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the United States Catholic Conference. It coordinates national pastoral programs, issues collective statements on doctrine and public policy, and represents the American Catholic episcopate before government and other institutions. It does not exercise governing authority over individual dioceses, which remain under their own bishops.
