Home›Core Tenets›The Cosmos and CreationGroupThe Cosmos and CreationThis group gathers the beliefs in the atlas whose main subject is how the world came to be and how it is ordered: accounts of creation, the origin and structure of the cosmos, and the place of people within it. Wikipedia defines a creation myth as a symbolic narrative of how the world began and how people first came to inhabit it, and defines cosmogony as any model concerning the origin of the cosmos or the universe. It notes that members of cultures often ascribe varying degrees of truth to their creation myths, and that in the society that tells it such a myth is usually regarded as conveying profound truths metaphorically, symbolically, historically or literally. Beliefs are placed here by their own recorded subject, so a reader can compare how different traditions answer the same question, and each belief entry keeps its own tradition, wording and sources.Browse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)Browse ByAll The Cosmos and CreationThe Cosmos and Creation13 entriesThe Cosmos and CreationFilter Results13 entriesStatus Within the TraditionAllBinding, without a formal definition (10)Rejected, or not held, within this tradition (2)Standard teaching, not formally defined (3)Origin Period Start YearAll-1500 (1)-400 (1)150 (1)Affirmation OfAllDependent origination (1)Prakriti (1)Purusha (1)Sunyata (1)Category of BeliefAllCosmological Beliefs (7)TraditionAllAmerican Humanist Association (1)Dragon Gate (1)Gelug (3)Humanists International (1)Irani Zoroastrianism (1)Jodo Shinshu (2)Jonang (3)Kagyu (3)Karma Kagyu (3)Kashmir Shaivism (1)Madhyamaka (3)Mahayana (3)New Atheism (1)Nichiren (3)Nichiren Shoshu (2)Nyingma (3)Parsi Zoroastrianism (1)Pure Land (2)Quanzhen (Complete Reality) (1)Rinzai (3)Sakya (3)Samkhya (1)Seicho-no-Ie (1)Sethianism (1)Shangqing (Highest Clarity) (1)Shingon (3)Soka Gakkai (2)Soto (3)Tendai (4)Theravada (2)Tiantai (4)Tibetan Buddhism (3)Vajrayana (3)Zen (3)Zhengyi (Orthodox Unity) (1)SubjectAllThe cosmos and creation (13)ObligationAllObligatory (3)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 13The cosmic struggle of good and evilCosmological Beliefs5 linksEmptiness (sunyata)Cosmological Beliefs17 linksYin and yangCosmological Beliefs5 linksThe universe is natural, with nothing beyond itCosmological Beliefs5 linksNahui Ollin: The Sun Requires Blood to Keep MovingCosmological Beliefs1 linkDependent origination (pratitya-samutpada)Cosmological Beliefs23 linksImpermanence (anicca)Cosmological Beliefs22 linksThree thousand realms in a single moment of thought (ichinen sanzen)Cosmological Beliefs3 linksThe World's Plurality Is an Appearance Superimposed by IgnoranceCosmological Beliefs1 linkPurusha and Prakriti: Consciousness and Nature Are Two Irreducible PrinciplesCosmological Beliefs3 linksThe World Is the Free Self-Expression of a Single Consciousness, Not an IllusionCosmological Beliefs1 linkThe Phenomenal World of Illness and Suffering Is Not Ultimately RealCosmological Beliefs1 linkThe Creator of This World Is a Lesser Power Beneath the True GodCosmological Beliefs1 linkSourcesWikipediatier 2Wikimedia FoundationCreation myth, lead sectionQuote, Creation myth, lead sectionmembers of cultures often ascribe varying degrees of truth to their creation mythsView the SourceComments (0)No comments yet.
