No Establishment

This page groups countries by whether they maintain an officially established religion. Wikipedia notes that "a state religion (also called official religion) is a religion or creed officially endorsed by a sovereign state," a status distinct from an unofficial majority faith. Browsing by establishment-status lets a visitor tell a country with a formally established religion from one without.

What a Country Page Covers

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A country entry is the atlas's record of a nation's religious life rather than a general history or a travel reference. Each one covers which traditions are practiced there and in roughly what proportion, whether the state recognizes an established or official religion, what its legal framework says about religious freedom and the recognition of minority communities, and which notable religious institutions, sites or movements are based within its borders.

This is deliberately narrower than a country profile in most general reference works, which is why a country entry here links out to the specific religions, denominations, sacred sites and organizations it is home to rather than trying to describe them itself. Reading a country page alongside those linked entries gives a fuller picture than either gives alone: the country page for the pattern and the legal setting, the linked entries for the depth on any one part of it.

A country entry also notes where its present religious composition has shifted markedly within living memory, through migration, conversion movements or state policy, since a snapshot of belief taken today can differ sharply from the picture a generation earlier, and that trajectory is often as informative as the current figures on their own.

Counting Belief: The Study of Religious Demography

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Knowing how many people in a country belong to a given tradition sounds like a simple counting problem and rarely is. Many national censuses do not ask about religion at all, some ask but let a respondent decline to answer, and self-identification on a form frequently disagrees with how regularly a person actually practices, so any single figure is really an answer to one specific question asked one specific way. Earlier estimates, drawn largely from missionary records through the first half of the twentieth century, have gradually been replaced by survey based social science with clearer, published methodology.

Two projects now anchor most current global figures: the World Religion Database, which compiles country level adherence data across every major and most minor traditions worldwide, and comparable large scale survey work from research organizations that publish their sampling methods openly. Neither claims certainty down to the last percentage point, and a careful country entry says so, treating a demographic figure as the best available estimate under a stated method rather than as a fixed fact.

Comparing figures across two different studies of the same country is itself a common source of apparent contradiction that is really just a difference in method, a census question worded one way against a survey worded another, and the atlas notes which source a figure comes from precisely so that kind of mismatch can be understood rather than mistaken for a real disagreement about the facts.
