Jesus is Lord, in Greek Kyrios Iesous, is described as the shortest credal affirmation found in the New Testament, one of several slightly more elaborate variations on the same confession. It appears in early Pauline writing, notably in Romans 10:9 and 1 Corinthians 12:3, and is thought to have been used in baptismal rites by the first century. In the Roman world, confessing Jesus as Lord stood in implicit contrast to the cult of the emperor, giving the simple phrase real political as well as theological weight, and it remains a statement of faith for the majority of Christians who hold Jesus to be both truly man and God; it is also the motto of the World Council of Churches.
