Solemni hac liturgia

Roman Catholic
Origin from 1968

Solemni hac liturgia, meaning this solemn liturgy, is a motu proprio issued by Pope Paul VI on June 30, 1968, whose text consists substantially of a creed known as the Credo of the People of God. Pope Paul VI described it as a profession of faith which, without being strictly a dogmatic definition, restates the Nicene Creed in substance with some developments called for by the spiritual condition of the time; the Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain drafted an initial version early in 1968, which the Pope then revised before its publication. It was issued in response to doctrinal uncertainty within the Catholic Church during the 1960s.
