Shwe Hpyin Nyidaw

Burmese Deities
Shwe Hpyin Nyidaw Tiger Mount

Shwe Hpyin Nyidaw, also called Shwe Hpyin Nge or Min Lay and meaning Goldpot the Younger, is one of the 37 Great Nats in the official pantheon of Burmese nats and the younger of the two Shwe Hpyin brothers, sons of the royal messenger Byatta and the ogress Me Wunna during the reign of King Anawrahta of Bagan. Like his elder brother Shwe Hpyin Naungdaw, already recorded in this same wave, he served as a warrior and spy before being executed for neglecting to supply a brick for Taungbyone Pagoda and becoming a nat; legend also tells that in life he loved a woman named Ma Shwe U who refused his proposal, and that his resentment endured after both had died, leading him to have his mount, a tiger, kill her, a story still marked today by the veiling of her shrine whenever the brothers' statues pass it during the Taungbyone festival.
