Guaicaipuro

Venezuelan Deities

Guaicaipuro was an Indigenous chief of the Teques and Caracas peoples in what is now Venezuela, born around 1530 near present-day Los Teques and killed by Spanish soldiers in 1568 after forming a coalition of native tribes to resist Spanish conquest of the Caracas valley. In Venezuelan popular spiritism he ranks as one of the principal spirits venerated in the Maria Lionza cult, alongside Maria Lionza herself, already recorded on this atlas, and Negro Felipe, a syncretic tradition that venerates historical indigenous and other leaders as spiritual entities.
