John Frum is the central figure of a Melanesian religious and political movement on the island of Tanna in Vanuatu, first recorded by colonial administrators in the late 1930s. He is described by followers as a spirit or ancestral figure, sometimes appearing as a man in military dress, who promises the return of prosperity and cargo, material wealth and goods, once colonial rule and missionary influence are set aside in favor of traditional Tannese custom (kastom). The movement grew rapidly during the Second World War, when the arrival of American forces and their material abundance on nearby islands was read by many as confirmation of John Frum's promise. Devotees on Tanna continue to observe John Frum Day each 15 February with parades that incorporate military drill and the American flag alongside traditional dance.

HistoricityLegendary: known from narrative tradition, not the historical record 2 Scholars are divided on whether John Frum reflects a real individual. Some early administrators and later researchers proposed he began as a specific Tannese visionary or as a garbled memory of an American serviceman; others treat him as a spirit figure without a single human original. This atlas records the movement and its belief as attested while leaving John Frum's own historical identity an open scholarly question. Function

TheologyJohn Frum sits inside a modern, syncretic movement that blends a spirit or ancestral figure with a political program of restoring kastom, so scholars of new religious movements do not classify the movement's theology under a single settled heading the way an older, more stable tradition can be.
