According to Ngarrindjeri tradition, the ancestral hero Ngurunderi chased an enormous Murray cod named Pondi down a stream in what is now central New South Wales, eventually forcing the fish to turn south and following it down the River Murray to the sea. Ngurunderi is said to have cut Pondi into pieces at Raukkan and thrown them into the water, each piece becoming a different species of fish, and the twin sandhills known as Lalangenggul are said to mark where he brought his rafts ashore.
