Kviria

Georgian Deities

Kviria is a hero and son of the gods in pre-Christian Georgian mythology who served as a mediator between the god Ghmerti, already recorded on this atlas, and humanity, invoked as the protector of human society and an instrument of divine justice. In some regions of Georgia he was regarded as a deity of fertility and the harvest, while in the mountains of western Georgia he was worshiped as the supreme deity in his own right. The festival of Kviratskholovba was celebrated in his honour, and scholars have connected erotic and orgiastic festivals held among the Pshavs, Khevsurs and Svans, along with ithyphallic figurines found at Kazbek on the Georgian Military Highway, to aspects of his cult.
