Semar

Javanese and Balinese Deities

Semar is a central figure of Javanese mythology and wayang shadow puppet theater, revered as the guardian spirit, or dhanyang, of Java and regarded by some practitioners as the most sacred figure in the entire wayang cast, understood as the god Sang Hyang Ismaya, brother of Batara Guru, already recorded on this atlas, taking human and comic form on earth. Despite an awkward, clownish appearance, Semar serves as a powerful spiritual advisor to royalty and heroes, appearing in performances as the leader of the punokawan, a group of clown servants that also includes his three sons Gareng, Petruk and Bagong. Semar's character embodies a deliberate contradiction between his rough, comic exterior and his spiritual authority: stories describe him protesting the will of the gods and even compelling a deity such as Batara Guru to act on his counsel, offering a grounded, realistic perspective that tempers the excesses of both despair and pride in the heroes around him.
