Deity

The Aesir

Also Known As AEsir

Norse Deities

The principal group of gods in Norse mythology, headed by Odin and based at Asgard. Most of the widely known Norse deities, including Odin, Thor, Frigg, Baldr, Tyr and Heimdall, belong to this group, alongside the three Norns who shape fate. The Aesir are associated with sovereignty, war, law, magic and the maintenance of cosmic order against the giants, the Jotnar. According to the Prose and Poetic Eddas they fought a war against a second group of gods, the Vanir, which ended in a truce and an exchange of hostages after which the Vanir Njord, Freyr and Freya came to live among them at Asgard.

History & Origin

The Aesir Vanir War, recounted in the Prose Edda and alluded to in Voluspa, ends in a truce sealed by an exchange of hostages, Njord, Freyr and Freyja passing to the Aesir while Hoenir and Mimir pass to the Vanir, a settlement some scholars read as a mythologized memory of two once distinct religious systems merging into one pantheon.

Era of Attestation

Named in Viking Age skaldic verse (9th to 11th centuries CE); the classification into Aesir and Vanir is systematized in the 13th century Prose and Poetic Eddas. 2

Veneration Today

Historically attested; no continuous cult 1

Veneration Status Detail

Matches the individual treatment of Odin, Thor and the other named Aesir: historically attested without a continuous cult. Modern Heathenry and Asatru invoke the Aesir collectively, but that revival is recorded as prose here rather than as the group's own status, so the collective does not read as having a livelier status than any of its named members individually. 3

Historicity

Theology

Polytheistic: many gods 3

Cult

Principal Cult Centre

The clearest ancient description of collective worship of the Aesir comes from the German chronicler Adam of Bremen, writing around 1070, who described a great temple at Gamla Uppsala in Sweden housing statues of Thor, Odin and Freyr, and receiving a festival of sacrifice held every nine years; the account is late and external to the tradition it describes, and scholars weigh its details with some caution. 1

Attributes and Iconography

The AEsir have no single combined image either. Norse pictorial art, from picture stones to later manuscript illustration, depicts individual members with their own attributes, Odin with his spear and ravens, Thor with his hammer, rather than the collective group as one figure or emblem. 1

Position Profile

Key Text

The Prose Edda describes a war between the Aesir and the rival Vanir gods that ends not in the destruction of either side but in a truce sealed by an exchange of hostages, Njord, Freyr and Freyja joining the Aesir in Asgard, a settlement scholars have read as a myth encoding the merger of two once distinct religious cults. 2

The Prose Edda distinguishes the Aesir from the Vanir, a second family of gods with whom they fought a war before exchanging hostages and living afterward in peace, an account read by scholars as reflecting an older layer of Norse religious history. 2

History

Historical Note

Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda recounts that the Aesir and the rival Vanir gods fought a war that ended in a truce sealed by an exchange of hostages, with Njord, Freyr and Freyja joining the Aesir at Asgard, an episode scholars have read as a mythologised memory of the merger of two once distinct religious traditions within Norse paganism. 2

Origins

Origin of the Name

Old Norse ass, plural aesir, a general Germanic word for a god; the Old English cognate os survives today only inside personal names such as Oswald. 1

Disputed

Point in Dispute

Whether the Aesir-Vanir division and the war between them reflect an actual prehistoric development, such as one cult absorbing another, or are a later literary and theological schema imposed on an originally undifferentiated pantheon, is unsettled. Georges Dumezil read the war as evidence for his trifunctional hypothesis of Indo-European society, a reading not universally accepted by Norse specialists. 3

A War Between Two Families of Gods, Told Two Ways

The war between the Aesir and the Vanir survives in two accounts that do not read alike. The Poetic Edda's Voluspa gives it in a handful of gnomic stanzas: a seeress named Gullveig is speared and burned three times in Odin's hall and rises again each time, an event the poem treats as the war's opening cause, then reports only that the Aesir debated whether to pay tribute or to fight, and that Odin cast his spear over the host, the gesture that traditionally opened a battle. The poem never narrates the fighting itself and never names a victor.

Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda, and his separate history Heimskringla, give a fuller and very different kind of account. In Heimskringla's Ynglinga Saga, Snorri euhemerizes the whole pantheon, presenting Odin as a historical chieftain leading a migrating people out of Asia into Scandinavia, so the Aesir and Vanir war becomes a war between two real, contending peoples rather than a cosmic contest between two divine houses.

Both versions agree on the outcome: a truce sealed by an exchange of hostages, the Vanir Njord, Freyr and Freya coming to live among the Aesir at Asgard while the Aesir Hoenir and Mimir go to live among the Vanir. They agree on one stranger detail too. Both sides spat into a shared vat to seal the peace, and from that spittle the gods made Kvasir, the wisest being ever to live, later killed by dwarves who brewed his blood into the mead of poetry.

Whether either telling preserves a real prehistoric event, one cult absorbing another as two peoples merged, or whether the whole war is a later literary scheme imposed on an originally undivided pantheon, is a live question among specialists rather than a settled one, addressed at length on the Aesir's own page.
