Kuba Deities
Woot Basket of Ancestral Knowledge

Woot is the culture hero and first human of Kuba (Bushongo) mythology, credited in tradition as the son of the creator deity Mbombo, also rendered Bumba. According to the myth, Woot named the animals, plants and other things of creation, introduced agriculture and the first systems of governance, and is honored as the founding figure and civilizing ancestor of the Kuba people, who refer to themselves as the 'Children of Woot.' Some versions of the myth add that Woot obtained a sacred basket of ancestral knowledge, in certain tellings by taking it from Mbombo, through which humanity received the foundations of culture and craft.
